Job Posting: Executive Director

Backyard Harvest (BYH) is seeking applications to fill a position of Executive Director. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for BYH staff, programs, funding, and execution of its mission. S/he will serve as the official “face” of the organization, build deep knowledge of and relationships throughout the Greater Palouse and Lewis-Clark Valley while helping implement core programs, communications, and fundraising plan, and will be responsible for implementing strategic initiatives for growth.

Core functions:

The Executive Director is responsible for leading a small, dedicated team of staff, and mobilizing volunteers to ensure greater access to fresh healthy produce across the Palouse and L/C Valley. The core functions include: Leadership & Management, Fundraising & Communications Operational Oversight & Execution, and Board Engagement. More specifically:

Leadership & Management

  • Lead with passion, enthusiasm, and warmth. Serve as the primary face and voice for the organization, in cooperation with board and staff. Hold and convey a compelling big-picture vision for Backyard Harvest.
  • Recruit, develop, and supervise an empowered, effective staff.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local universities, hospitals, and other aligned organizations.

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Create annual fundraising plan and oversee all fundraising activities in cooperation with board and staff including individual donor development and stewardship, grant writing, and events.
  • Write, administer, and report on grants; seek new grant sources of funding that align with mission and programs.
  • Expand local revenue-generating and donor stewardship to support existing program operations and local expansion.
  • Manage the Backyard Harvest budget and financial reports.
  • Oversee all communication needs for the organization.

 Operational Oversight & Execution:

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals.
  • Develop an excellent volunteer program, including volunteer protocols and effective, timely volunteer communication and management.

Board Engagement:

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; serve as ex-officio member of each Board committee; seek and build Board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing local operations.
  • Work in partnership with board chair to ensure that all board committees are staffed and that committee meetings are scheduled as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop and communicate a compelling vision; engage board, staff, and community stakeholders as co-creators of vision; and effectively implement vision.
  • Experience in organizational management with a strong orientation toward: shared leadership and collaboration with staff & volunteers; setting and achieving strategic objectives and managing a budget that includes grants.
  • Fundraising experience including grants, individual donor solicitation, business sponsorships, etc.
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors; the ability to cultivate existing Board member relationships and to identify new members.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Experience working productively and collaboratively across diverse audiences, including with low-income communities, volunteers, and donors.
  • Ability to work independently with confidence. Excellent prioritization and time management skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including experience with Excel spreadsheets, CRMs, Google Drive, budget preparation and adherence, and social media platforms.
  • Passion for and knowledge of local food systems, gardening, hunger, and nutrition.

Hours & Salary:

  • Occasional weekend and evening availability required
  • 30 hours/week, on average, with summer being a busier time.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience and includes paid vacation.
