Position Summary

Central Co-op is proud of its commitment to quality foods and supporting small vendors and is seeking someone who joins in our enthusiasm and is excited to share that story! The Perishables Buyer is responsible for overseeing ordering and stocking in our Chill & Freeze areas, building relationships with vendors, and providing knowledgeable product information and friendly customer service.

Primary Position Responsibilities

● Ensuring that the Chill & Freeze areas operate effectively and efficiently, in collaboration with the Center Store Manager

● Ordering product according to purchasing and product quality guidelines, customer needs, seasonality, and current product trends

● Seeking out and building relationships with mission-aligned vendors

● Stocks, rotates, merchandises, and faces product, manages new products and discontinued items, and maintains backstock areas in compliance with cleanliness and food safety standards

● Providing exceptional, friendly customer service, as well as detailed, specific product information to both customers and co-workers

● Receiving and verifying product orders, cataloguing and coding invoices, and ensuring that new items and vendors are entered into the ordering system promptly

● Maintaining stock levels and taking pride in the appearance and merchandising of product coolers

Other responsibilities may include:

● Assisting in other store departments as necessary

● Upholding the values of Central Co-op in daily work


● Previous ordering/buying experience, preferably in a retail grocery setting

● Ability to take direction from management and work independently to meet expectations.

● Desire to provide an excellent and friendly customer experience, and effectively listen to and communicate with customers and co-workers

● Flexibility in scheduling, including evening and weekend availability

● Ability to prioritize and maintain focus in a fast-paced environment

● Ideally, Chill & Freeze, natural foods, and/or customer service experience

Physical Demands

● Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

● Frequently requires: standing; walking; kneeling; squatting; bending; reaching; working in cool, cold, or wet environments; use of box cutters; and fine hand manipulation.
