Position Summary

Central Co-op’s Produce department is at the heart of our desire to provide fresh, healthy food to all, and is the aesthetic centerpiece of our store! The Produce Manager is responsible for overseeing all product and staff operations in this crucial fresh department, as well as collaborating with other department and store leadership to provide an outstanding customer experience for shoppers.

Position Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Produce Manager is to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Produce department. This includes, but is not limited to:

● Tracking sales, managing inventory, and ordering product to ensure freshness, meet customer demand, and uphold product quality standards

● Delivering and modeling phenomenal customer service at all times

● Training new staff, and nurturing a culture of continuing education to all department staff

● Develops professional relationships with suppliers, farmers, and vendors

● Scheduling staff and delegating work assignments daily; and effectively communicating department procedures for ordering, receiving, stocking, and merchandising

● Understanding sales, margin, and labor budget goals and working with the Leadership Team to set and meet them. Leading category management for products.

● Developing and implementing department merchandising plans & displays to drive sales

● Upholding company policies for safe food handling, cleanliness, and sanitation.

● Working as part of a collaborative model in which managers provide leadership and support to the store as a whole, as well as within their home departments.

Other responsibilities include:

● Ensuring adherence to the Co-op’s safety, security, and Accident Prevention protocols

● Familiarity with our union contract, and following all aspects of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (working conditions, breaks, scheduling, overtime, etc).

● Upholding the values of Central Co-op in daily work.


● 3+ years of experience in retail grocery management and/or supervision.

● Demonstrated leadership ability, and strong communication skills.

● Desire and skill to provide exceptional customer service.

● Ability to build and support a strong, positive, supportive, collaborative team

● Flexibility in scheduling, and the ability and expectation of working nights & weekends

● Ideally, experience managing in a natural foods, cooperative model, and/or union environment

● Demonstrated experience in effective retail grocery category management, inventory, merchandising, and managing sales, margins and labor budgets.
