What’s Happening

-from the desk of Vicki Reich, Interim Executive Director

It’s amazing how fast a month can go by when you are deeply immersed in projects.  So much has happened since the last issue of the Provender e-news.  Let me catch you up.

The 41st Annual Educational Conference is taking shape.  We have both Thursday and Friday Keynote Speakers confirmed.  Our Thursday morning keynote is Valerie Segrist who teaches classes on traditional food and medicine for the Northwest Indian College’s Cooperative Extension Department.  She is part of the Muckleshoot Food Sovereignty Project, working to get traditional foods back into Native American diets.

Our Friday morning keynote is Chef Ann Cooper who is an advocate of healthy food for all children.  She founded the Chef Ann Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping schools take action so that every child has daily access to fresh, healthy food.  Check out our website for more details on both of these awesome women.

We have two fantastic intensives lined up for Wednesday.  One will be focused on Lean and Kaizen and has the working title of “Lean Business: Creating a Culture of Continuous Improvement”.  Justin Freeman of Hummingbird Wholesale and Kjell van Zoen will be leading this session.

The second intensive will focus on deli operations.  Allen Seidner and Michelle O’Connor will be teaching this session.  These are two of the best minds in the natural food service business.  If you are involved in a deli, you won’t want to miss this.

Many of the workshops are taking shape and about half of them are confirmed.  I am still open to any workshop ideas you may have.  Please feel free to contact me if you’d like to see workshops on a specific topic or if you are interested in being a workshop presenter.

Besides the conference, I’ve been spending time learning about and setting up the new membership software.  This new program will allow us to host a member forum, offer on-line registration for the conference, make it easy to update your membership information and renew your membership.  It’s just a bit harder to implement then I originally thought.  I am making progress and hope to send out log in information soon.  Please be patient with me and the new system as we all learn how to make the best use of it.

That’s all for this month,

Vicki
