SPP is both an intercontinental network and a label belonging to small-scale organic fair trade producers organizations from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, with its own independent certification system. Offering many of the agricultural products consumers purchase daily, the SPP mission is to empower farmers by taking the lead in bringing real fairness to supply chains.
In 2018, responding to the strong and consistent requests from their producer partners in Mexico, Café Mam decided to join SPP. This workshop will highlight what we have learned from the only 100% producer-driven collective for fairly traded and ecologically sustainable food products. We’ll share current photos, stories, and a short film featuring producers engaged in the SPP Global certification system. And, yes! There will be coffee.
Join us to learn what those who are most invested in the health of the land they cultivate want us to hear: Their vision for sustainable production, authentic fair-trade, and connecting consumers with small-scale producers through responsible brands who purchase their goods.
SPP es una red intercontinental de organizaciones de pequeños productores orgánicos y de comercio justo de Latinoamérica, África y Asia. Son los gerentes del sello SPP y su propio sistema de certificación independiente. Ofreciendo muchos de los productos agrícolas que los consumidores compran a diario, la misión de SPP es empoderar a los productores a liderar la implementación de una justicia autentica en las cadenas de suministro.

Megan Bassett
Megan studied Latin American History & Politics and Spanish language at the University of Oregon and worked serving migrant families before entering into the natural foods world. Her experience provides an engaging lens through which to view Café Mam’s 35-year relationship with producer-owned cooperatives in Chiapas, Mexico. Speaking on a variety of contextual topics including coffee’s exploitative colonial origins, the pivotal emergence of producer-owned cooperatives practicing sustainable agroforestry, and the inspiring emergence of SPP Global Certification as a voice for small-scale and indigenous producers, Megan conveys the challenges of these complex issues with passion and hope for what is possible as we strive to co-create a healthy and just planet for all.
Fernando Rodriguez Lopez
Fernando was born in Mexico City and studied Social Anthropology at the Autonomous University of Chiapas. Before arriving at La Unión Majomut, Fernando worked on rural projects for the National Indigenous Institute of Chiapas. This work enabled him to learn the founding processes of Majomut and others that emerged from the challenging economic and political climate in the region of Los Altos de Chiapas. Since 2006, Fernando has been responsible for trade, social and political relations, including participation in organic business networks and fair trade and incidental political work related to coffee cultivation in Mexico. This has enabled the development of long-term trade relations with buyers and importers from Europe, the US and Canada who are committed to fair trade and the SPP (Small Producers Symbol). Fernando also coordinates community development work with collectives of women and youth seeking to promote food self-sufficiency and family development for coffee-growing families.
José Fernando Rodríguez López (Fernando), Coordinador y Asesor de la Unión de Productores de Café Orgánicos Majomut
Fernando nació en la Ciudad de México y estudió Antropología Social en la Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas. Antes de llegar a La Unión Majomut, Fernando trabajó en proyectos rurales para el Instituto Nacional Indigenista de Chiapas. Este trabajo le permitió aprender los procesos fundacionales de Majomut y otros que surgieron del desafiante clima económico y político de la región de Los Altos de Chiapas.
Desde el 2006, Fernando es responsable de relaciones comerciales, sociales y políticas, incluyendo la participación en redes de negocios orgánicos y de comercio justo y el trabajo político incidental relacionado con el cultivo del café en México. Esto ha permitido el desarrollo de relaciones comerciales a largo plazo con compradores e importadores de Europa, Estados Unidos y Canadá que se comprometen al comercio justo y al SPP (Símbolo de Pequeños Productores de Café). Fernando también coordina el trabajo de desarrollo comunitario con colectivos de mujeres y jóvenes que buscan promover la autosuficiencia alimentaria y el desarrollo familiar para las familias que cultivan café.
